What is cookie ?
- A cookie is a piece of text that a web server store on a user's hard disk. Cookie allows a website to store information on user's machine and later retrieve it.
- Cookies are not a code or a program, if executed will deliver viruses to your computer, it is not true. Cookies are structured as a text file which has an identification number of your machine it is essentially created so that the web server keeps a record of your last activity on their web page. Cookies tell the web server what to display for a particular user; it can also be called as Bookmark.
- If you are on a online shopping website, it lets you save your ordering information to your cart, so user don't need to remember them later.
- It also stores your preferences and themes, certain website lets you customize site layout to your preferences.
- Disabling cookies may prevent you using certain website.
How it works?
- When you type any address in URL or address bar, the browser tells the server of the website you visiting to allow accessing the webpage. And in return, server send cookies in a form of .txt file which contains your computer's information.
- The server ask browser to save this file in hard disk, so that it can be invoked again whenever you try to visit them again. This helps you to navigate through their website more efficiently.
What does it do?
- Cookies objective is to identify user and set preferences or customize the page. So when you visit a site, it look for the ID it stored on a disk as a cookie - if ID exists on your computer then site knows that you have at least visited this site once, before.
- Deleting ID will not give you the same preference and the site welcomes you as a new user and generates new ID, this may create problem for the site to keep record or track on the number of visitor on their web page, all this can be sorted if the user use the Login information by creating a log-in Id on that website. If you create an ID it keeps track of your activity and same preferences can be restored if in case the cookies are lost.
- Example: It is helpful in online shopping site, ticket booking, web portal and many more.
